Intelligent Mobility
The future of transport and communications
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) sits at the convergence of two important sectors for Coventry and Warwickshire – transport and communications. In transport, we’re at the heart of the UK’s automotive industry with OEMs like BMW, JLR, Tata Motors and Aston Martin and more than 1,500 suppliers in the region. As for communications and IT, Coventry and Warwickshire has an excellent track record with companies like Ericsson, IBM and Serco, as well as Oracle (in nearby Solihull).
Many of these companies have come together to support a bid to UK government for the establishment of a Future Transport Systems – Intelligent Mobility TIC (Technology and Innovation Centre) in the area. Major ITS players backing the bid include Coventry University, University of Warwick/WMG, the automotive R&D campus MIRA and innovITS, the UK centre for excellence in intelligent transport systems.
We have the world's first purpose-built facility to develop and test ITS innovations. In 2011, innovITS-ADVANCE, an international centre for developing ITS was opened at MIRA. It offers a safe, controlled and private environment with sophisticated road and telecoms infrastructure to help develop and test applications.
And we have an R&D Test Base. Coventry University is building on its world-class research expertise and facilities in automotive, telecommunications and design, and is active across a number of ITS projects.
