About Cord
Cord is an international peace building charity working in Africa and Asia in societies affected by violent conflict and poverty, helping communities find their own solutions, and to build a sustainable peace.
Working with the University of Warwick
Cord identified areas within the UK organisation which would benefit from the resources of a high calibre internship, but which would provide an opportunity for a Warwick University graduate or student to gain valuable work experience in the highly sought after international development field.
The internship was highly successful for both parties, and I would recommend the experience to other companies in the area.
Working with students/graduates
The graduate students were keen and highly motivated and performed above our expectations, making a valuable contribution to the organisation. Feedback from the students said that they were pleased with our structured approach to the internship. We felt that the pre planning stage contributed to the overall success of the placement so both parties were aware at the outset of what was expected.
One of the negatives was that we had a high level of applications for the internship, and the quality of some applications was poor. Some students just emailed a CV with no covering letter, or with a covering letter which did not relate in any way to the job description, or mention the skills highlighted in the job description. It did make me wonder why some candidates were applying when they were clearly not suitable for the roles!
Future engagement
We would certainly be looking to engage and collaborate with the University in future.
