To kickstart the project:

  • funding was secured to deliver key infrastructure to connect the site to the city
  • the City Council invested £40m+ to develop the first building in the scheme and to act as the Council’s new HQ  
  • funding has been secured from the WMCA to support the delivery of the next phase of buildings within the scheme

To deliver Coventry’s new business district, funding was secured through the Regional Growth Fund and the European Union Regional Development Fund to construct a 100m wide bridge deck over Coventry ring road providing a level public boulevard to the station, which was previously cut off from the rest of the city centre. 

This has triggered a full-scale £82m regeneration of the station itself which is well underway and has opened up development space for 1,000,000 sq feet of new commercial office buildings. The first office building has now been completed and houses Coventry City Council’s new headquarters.  In addition this award winning building has attracted the Financial Ombudsman and Homes England to the city. 

A 50/50 joint venture was established in February 2019 between the City Council and Friargate Coventry Development Ltd to lead the delivery of the business district. The current priority is the delivery of the second office building which will deliver 180,000 sq ft of grade A office space. Work on this building is due to start in the early part of 2020.
