Opened in May 2017 the NTDC is an international centre of design excellence for innovation and research, in a ‘state-of-the-art’ design environment, which develops the specialist designers, creative leaders and new products needed for business growth in the UK High-Value Manufacturing sector.

It brings together students, designers and manufacturers to advance the concept-to-production process of class-leading design.

To explore and refine new design concepts, the £7m facility is fully equipped with the latest design technology.

Complete with a six-metre interactive power wall, which offers virtual reality concept examination, clay-milling facilities to create three-dimensional models and a projection mapping system that casts digital images on to three-dimensional objects, the NTDC is equipped for future design solutions.

The project aligns with a broader approach to creating a new design education pathway which would include apprenticeship, higher apprenticeship, degree apprenticeship, undergraduate, postgraduate, and research.

Alongside workshop-based design capabilities, the NTDC accommodates:

  • A six-metre interactive power wall which allows users to explore detailed design and engineering concepts in virtual reality.
  • Advanced clay milling machines for creating physical models up to six tonnes in weight.
  • A projection mapping system which can cast digital images onto 3D objects below, helping designers to assess multiple options on full-scale models.
  • The Roland Academy, a space containing a wide range of digital 2D and 3D printers.
  • A design/research office space for dedicated design development and research projects.
  • Incubation offices for industry related new and developing business.
